Eyes of the Beholder
Some day watch visitors
in a portrait hall…
measured paces
close inspection
thoughtful poses.
They stand back
for the full effect
of the famous or nearly so
captured like rare insects
pinned upon a mat.
Then notice how a person pauses
time transfigured
matching gaze for gaze
before the self-portrait
of an artist.
If humanity awareness is anywhere
it’s in the eyes
of artist and beholder.
Then the illusion holds…
until time and place remembering
leads to understanding
of a reason for the visit.
